Milestones I

Omar memorized and repeated his first spelling today. He had learned ABC a while ago in pre-school and at home as well. So Last night I picked up his book and told him what does the dog say: spelled as "Woof," only once.

Today, early in the morning, while brushing his teeth I asked him about last night; what does dog say? And he spelled back "W O O F."

I will be spending more time with him. Teaching at UMT is fun but teaching your own kids is much bigger fun and joyful thing that one cannot imagine. It gives you a feeling of accomplishments in life. It is like reaching out to them when they reach out to you (I have picked his "thumbs up dad" picture taken a while ago for this post).

  • I guess teaching your own kids and watching them grow is like being reborn again.

    I'm sure it's a satisfying nod!

  • Oh Yeah! I have had many sleepless nights just thinking about the kids and their learning. Even started thinking that they might have attention deficit disorder but infact we have to understand that it takes time for everything. We just need to be paitent.

  • Don't you laugh man! when you will become dad you will know!! You get anxious to see progress. You will think like ...that I did all the a, b, c, and "alif" "bay" "pay" when I was 3 and recited whole Quran at 7 so what's hapening to my kids. Am I not giving them enough time or they have some kind of disorder...? But Yaar! all This anxitey is just because we don't have a parenting experience. Now it makes me realize how much our parents were anxious to see us progress? My wife always disagreed with my theory and I think she was right. Omar is doing great at age 4.
Unfortunately, American school system has some flaws and kids really don't learn much if parents do not put lot of effort. Home schoolers are doing much better and winning competitions. My wife did not believe in that but I am glad that her blief in perfect american schooling is broken. Pre-Schools here don't really teach anything except play stuff. I remember I was in Nursery KG-1 back in Pakistan and they used to teach us a lot and I was able to progress so fast that my father transfered me to class 1 at the age of 3.5. I did my high school at the age of 13.5 which is unbelivable for many. However, I did not do well in later years as stress took over. Got back on track after anohter 5 years but I did learn a lot even in the years when I was not making progress from an academic criteria perspective. I think kids should take their time and they do fine.

  • You are so right! Well, primary education in American school is flawed. I know my sister going through it and I felt at her age I was a much acute student but in the end she managed her way through.

Good Luck raising kids! I know it's a tough job and right now I don't even wanna think about it ;-)
